A Toast to Ships of Pride
By James Scott
A toast to ships Long ago, these ships were the pride of the fleet. Ships with names like USS Hornet, USS Enterprise, and HMS War spite have seen both glory in victory and humiliation of defeat but still returned for more. The Admiral calls, and the ships respond. Whether from the coast of Jutland; to the islands of Midway; to missions of peace retrieving astronauts, these ships perform their duties above and beyond their crews and Captains and credit to their navies. Yet despite all the glory ships may attain, only a few have been enshrined for posterity, and the rest go to scrap. Whether like an old war horse put out to pasture like USS Enterprise or violently breaking as much as it can like HMS War Spite, all ships have their day of pride, and all ships have their day of rest. So, look at this destroyer performing its duty and remember all ships rise and all ships fall, and if they are lucky, a new ship will have its name, bringing their glory to the next generation.
